Sealand,The Kingdom of Fusa, Kymaerica, Elgaland-Vargaland-all are countries that you will not find on the UN's list of official states! Known as micro-nations, model countries, or new country projects, these and other "fictional" states have been vehicles for the aspirations of a surprisingly diverse array of characters, ranging from utopian political dreamers and engaged artists to charlatans and tricksters. Sina Najafi will present a history of fictional states from the nineteenth century to the present, and ask why they have survived, and even thrived, in an age in which no unclaimed land remains in the world.
Sina Najafi is editor-in-chief of Cabinet magazine and the editorial director of Cabinet Books. He has curated or co-curated a number of exhibitions and has taught at Cooper Union, Yale, and RISD. He studied Comparative Literature at Princeton University, Columbia University, and New York University.
