Painter, Writer Emelie Howard

Best known in Ridgefield for her newspaper column, “Taking Care of Mama,” and her dedication as an active and vocal advocate for women and heart disease, Emelie won her first art contest at age eight. She was awarded a four-year scholarship to the Maryland Institute of Art; then sought new opportunities in New York City where she started work at CBS TV and was invited to join the CBS Scenic Design Union as a student designer.
Over the years Emelie continued to work creatively, in the design business as an art director, producer, director of multi-media educational programs and in her own marketing and promotion Agency.
Says Emelie; “Each time I start a new canvas, it’s as though I am a researcher experimenting with new tools, new techniques and challenging existing boundaries.” Her work is sometimes 3-D, uses both acrylic and oils in combination and always bright, colorful, filled with life -- sometimes serious, sometimes humorous and in collections in the United States and Australia.

Painter Frances B. Ashforth
Frances B. Ashforth has always been drawn to line, color, edges and boundaries. For as long as she can remember, the horizon line and its relationship between land, water and sky has fascinated her. Ashforth’s images are simple, quick memories of color and light within landscape. Always amazed with the essence of markmaking, seeking solace in landscape and open spaces, Ashforth is intrigued by man's relationship to the land, both historically and at present. Believing that we have not had a good track record with land use, she tries to continue to have faith that we will all become good stewards of the land, sooner or later. “Our world moves at an extreme pace and my need is to retreat to a quieter time through memory, sense of place, color, light and composition,” explains Ashforth. Her work has been shown on both the east and west coasts with numerous pieces in both private and corporate collections. She works out of her private studio in Ridgefield.

Painter Mary Louise O'Connell
Ever since Mary Louise first walked into kindergarten, she was determined to be an artist. That day she saw a painting on the classroom wall that inspired her. It was such a wonderful painting—in the eyes of a five-year-old—that she could barely look at it and she could hardly wait to make a painting like that. She’s happiest when putting paint on canvas and losing herself in the process. Picking up the brush and applying paint is a most exciting personal experience. Mary Louise has come to realize that painting is always a learning experience, very much like the creative process of writing poetry. It’s always a matter of small, subtle changes in both painting and writing that make the difference.

Sculptor, Mixed Media Painter. Home studio. Milo Dalbey
An eleven year resident of Ridgefield, Milo Dalbey's artwork is indicative of an old soul with modern sensibilities. He is a retired art teacher from Mamaroneck High School in Mamaroneck, N.Y. where he served as Chairman of the department. He has taught as an adjunct professor at the New School in New York City and was an assistant professor at The School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received a master's degree in humanities from the University of Buffalo. Finding imagery through the use of steel, iron, and cast iron have inspired Dalbey to create abstract and figurative pieces of indoor and outdoor sculpture. Often using antique farm instruments to suggest movement, monumentality and humor, the pieces are then welded into forms that are both enduring and timeless. His mixed media pieces include a collection of works using envelopes that embody the lost art of the handwritten letter and a series of abstract paintings using textures to evoke form and emotion. Mr. Dalbey's work is sold by appointment from his home studio.

Watercolor, Clay Sally Aldrich
Sally Aldrich works in two spontaneous, wet media – watercolor and clay. In her own words she explains, "I like to search for the essence of things, whether it is in a nautilus shell, an orchid, fish or small animal. This forces me to strip away non-essentials, search for truth and express the simple beauty I find in a bold way." When she works in clay or paint, she works to feel the gesture of the form, drawing or shaping it without excess. Her watercolors combine abstraction with drawing from life. She soaks 300-pound Arches paper, allowing the wet paint to create accidents, controlling the paper as it dries. Please visit her website for a complete resume and more examples of her work.

Weir Farm Art Center
Weir Farm, located on the borders of Ridgefield and Wilton has served more than 500 children in the Art Explorer summer classes since 1999 and the program has gained a strong reputation locally. The majority of students live in the towns of Wilton and Ridgefield, though many come from other surrounding towns of Fairfield County. Weeklong art and nature classes are offered during July and August that appeal to the creative imaginations of the young while educating them about the flora and fauna indigenous to Weir Farm and instructing them on the basic techniques of drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. This program is unique because both the landscape and the site are fundamentally connected to the artistic legacy established by Weir 125 years ago; and remarkably, both have remained virtually unchanged. Responding to the same vistas that inspired Weir, such as the pond that Weir built, or his “secret garden”, or the wooded trails surrounding the farm, Art Explorer children find their own inspiration and their own way of expression.

The Ridgefield Playhouse
Designed in 1938, the auditorium has been designed to embrace its former role and more. Able to seat 515 people in an orchestra and mezzanine (balcony) style setting, for events, it is also home to showing movies on a large screen. The retractable draperies cover the walls enabling the "deadening" effect needed to show movies. The stage was built to have the resilience necessary for dance performances. Private events, concerts, birthday parties and conferences are just a few of the events that can be booked. Must call for more information on cost as this is based on size of party, space and event.
